If you are suffering from this embarrassing and often uncomfortable condition, you may not realize that bacterial vaginosis natural cures can be used to excellent effect-very often surpassing the effectiveness of antibiotics or other conventional medication.

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance of the naturally occurring bacteria within the vagina. There are two types of bacteria normally present-Lactobacillus, which is a beneficial bacteria and Gardnerella, which is harmful. Under normal circumstances, the two types are self-balancing, with the good bacteria working hard to keep the bad bacteria under control. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when something happens to cause an imbalance and the harmful bacteria grows out of control, causing the unpleasant symptoms of bacterial vaginosis which include itching and burning around the vaginal area and a fishy smelling discharge which can be very offensive and is normally gray or white in color and of watery appearance.

When antibiotics are taken, these work by killing off bacteria within the vagina. Unfortunately, they cannot distinguish between the good and bad bacteria so both forms are killed off. This means that although they might initially work to eliminate the symptoms, as soon as bacteria begins to naturally repopulate the vagina, there will not be sufficient beneficial bacteria to keep the harmful bacteria under control so the whole cycle begins again.

This is why well over half of women who take antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis will have a repeat attack within a few short weeks.

A course of antibiotics can work out to be very expensive, particularly if you need further supplies. In addition, many forms of bacteria become resistant to antibiotics meaning that they can easily lose their effectiveness. The worry then is if you need antibiotics to treat a more serious life threatening illness, you could find that they do not work.

You do not have this problem with bacterial vaginosis natural cures. By working to naturally strengthen and augment the body’s own ability to heal, harmful bacteria is naturally eliminated and the strengthened immune system improves overall health.

There are various bacterial vaginosis natural cures you can try which can help your body to overcome this condition. One excellent remedy is natural yogurt. Live, natural yogurt contains Lactobacillus, the beneficial bacteria which we need in the vagina. Either by eating the yogurt, or by soaking a tampon in it to insert into the vagina for a couple of hours, we can help build up the levels which will help maintain control.

Another good natural cure is to take a bath in water which contains a couple of cups of cider vinegar. The naturally acidic levels will help to neutralize the alkaline conditions which are present when bacterial vaginosis occurs.
